He Rewrote Everything in Rust — Then Fired the Whole Team
A CTO’s bold bet on Rust, performance dreams, and a costly team shakeup. Here’s how it unfolded — and what it teaches us.
The Rebuild That Changed Everything
It started with good intentions.
Our backend was in deep pain and frustration. We had performance bottlenecks, a codebase that had grown messy over time, and a team frustrated with legacy tech. Most of it was in Node.js and Python. The CTO, let’s call him Arun, had a vision: rebuild everything in Rust.
It wasn’t a decision he made in isolation. Arun had been reading about Rust’s memory safety, blazing-fast performance, and the control it gave over systems programming. We’d hit enough walls with garbage collection pauses and runtime exceptions. Rust looked like a silver bullet.
“Rust won’t just make our backend faster,” he said, “It’ll force discipline and rewrite our culture.”
It did. Just not how he expected.
Why Rust Looked Like the Answer
Arun was partly right. Rust solves real problems that languages like Python or Node can struggle with:
